The American National Standard For Safety Of Corded Window Covering Products went into effect June 1, 2024. This regulation requires most window coverings sold in the US to be cordless or have cords intentionally made with safety devices. It is a vital step toward phasing out using cords that pose a strangulation hazard to small children.
A New Window Cover Safety Standard
The Window Covering Manufacturers Association and American National Standards Institute has established the new safety standard for window treatment products. ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022 is a precaution that gives new requirements for window treatments that “reduce the possibility of injury, including strangulation, to young children from the bead chain, cord, or any type of flexible loop.”
Beginning June 1, 2024, window coverings sold in the USA must meet the new safety standard. The majority of products will convert to cordless designs. Treatments that use a continuous loop must include a certain tension device that stops the loop from becoming a strangulation threat. These rules will notably reduce the possibility of window treatment cord injuries and deaths among small children.
